My dear lover Jsun told me today that after we saw MJ’s THIS IS IT and I was all hyped up and skipping down the street in Chelsea, a row of girls said to him as he followed me “Is she with you?…. You’re lucky.”

While this makes me feel immensely special and noticed, I am saddened, too. The ability to SKIP and GALLOP and LEAP should be free to EVERYONE!!! For this, I must quest. To spread the freedom to rejoice and make waves! Get into it, people. We’re all in this together.

After personally witnessing Nelson Mandela describe the African HIV pandemic as a genocide, with women and children becoming the frontline victims, Annie Lennox set out to try and do something about it.

The stigma of HIV is so high that people are afraid to talk openly about the issue, or  disclose their status. South Africa has a tradition of activist songs and singing, as a way to create solidarity and communicate messages.

When people get together to sing, they become encouraged and inspired. In the words of Nelson Mandela: “Let us use the universal language of music, to sing out our message around the world.”

First off, I mention- MJ did not write this song at all, according to the credits here. Yet, he knew it inside and out, as we see in THIS IS IT, he did for every song he ever performed. Amen AMEN how he owned it, and felt it, the quintessential performer.

Lyrics: So simple in premise- he’s inside, feels the buzz of the city outside. Hears a girl. Goes out, sees a girl- is she a prostitute? Likely. Either way, he goes for it, it’s Human Nature.
But it’s so tender and plaintive, his reasoning to the night, his self reckoning. “Why…” And that’s the only part anyone ever remembers from the song- the gut reaction, the visceral emotion.
He questions, bargains with himself, his own morals or place in the world, even though he talks about “they say”; it’s clearly his own projection. Then there is forgiveness and acceptance- almost won.
